Organic Makeup

Organic makeup is better for your skin because eliminates harmful chemicals and preservatives. But there are so many ”natural” and “organic” choices available; how do you know what to look for?

Let’s start with the basics. Before you apply your makeup, make sure the surface of your face is cleaned and primed properly. Use organic skin cleansers, toners and moisturizers because the ingredients of these products will be penetrating your skin. Make sure it’s safe!

Foundation is used to provide coverage for uneven skin tone. Not everyone uses it but if you do, you have 2 choices, liquid or powder. A liquid foundation will also penetrate your skin layers, too, so make sure yours is safe.

Mineral makeup has become very popular lately because it provides coverage without penetrating your skin. It’s made from natural, finely-ground minerals from the earth and doesn’t contain any irritants that can cause skin reactions from using traditional makeup. Some mineral makeup product lines have versions for blush and eye shadow.

One tool that is needed for proper application of mineral makeup is called a kabuki brush. You just swirl your brush into the powder, tap the excess off the bristles and then buff it on in circles on your face.

Finding a good organic mascara that delivers results is kind of tricky, though. I’ve been using an organic version lately and didn’t like it because it goes on gloppy and extends my lashes only very slightly.

There are lots of great organic lip glosses and crèmes made from essential oils that deliver the same kind of results that traditional lip products provide but with safer ingredients. In fact, some perform even better than traditional versions because they contain fruit oils and extracts that nourish your lips.

Organic makeup has actually been around for a long time because the main ingredients that are present in mineral makeup (mica, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) were present in regular makeup before cosmetic manufacturers started adding fragrance and other preservatives to extend shelf life.

Remember to read your ingredient labels and watch for toxic ingredients toxic ingredients . Just because it says “natural” on the front label doesn’t mean it’s good for you.
