Organic Drinks
Organic coffee
is growing in popularity. In fact, the organic coffee market increased over 40% from 2004 to 2005 so people are really enjoying their organic cup o’ joe. The USDA has some strict standards for what’s considered organic coffee including where and how it’s grown as well as the normal pesticide and herbicide issues.
Tea is recognized as a very healthy drink because of the antioxidants present but if it’s not organic, you could be reversing those health benefits. Tea plants are grown in soil that can’t be revitalized through crop rotation so many conventional tea farmers just spray the tea plants with chemical fertilizers. Organic tea farmers use manure, rich compost or plant cuttings to supply the plants with the nutrients needed for a healthy tea.
People are also discovering organic wine, too, although some may argue there is no such thing. The reason is that sulfites are added to wine as a preservative. Sulfites are also a natural by-product of the fermentation process. Sulfites are actually not toxic to humans if handled properly. So when you see “organic” on a wine label, it usually means that the wine is made from organic grapes. The USDA standards are that organic wine can contain up to 100 ppm (parts per million) of sulfites in the finished product. However, most organic wines only contain about 40-60 ppm.
Organic milk is one of the fastest-growing segments of the organic drinks market. Organic milk comes from cows that are not given hormone shots to increase milk production or antibiotics. The cows have also been fed organic grain. But many brands are given a longer shelf life through the ultrapasteurization process and many people object to that if they are looking for pure organic milk . If that’s you, go to your local farmer’s market or find a local dairy that can provide fresh milk for you. Just be aware that it will spoil a lot faster if it’s not pasteurized.
