Non Toxic Pest Control Recipes
Most non toxic pesticides use food as their main ingredient. Here are some recipes that you can try to control your own pest problem. Put hot sauce on a cotton ball and place in the pot of a houseplant to repel pests. Bugs don’t care for dead bugs so this simple recipe will keep the bugs away, although it’s a little gross. Simply gather together a collection of dead bugs, place in a blender with water and stir the mix until spraying consistency. Spray wherever you have a bug problem and don't mind having bits of bugs lying around.
Garlic is a wonderfully effective natural pest control. Plant it with tomatoes and keep away red spider mites.Plant it around fruit trees and it will stop borers. Spray garlic-based oils on ponds to keep away mosquitoes. The following recipe for garlic and mineral oil can be used to control cabbageworm, leafhoppers, squash bugs, and whitefly in your garden but if sprayed indiscriminately, it can harm beneficial plants so be careful how you apply. Garlic and Mineral Oil Concentrate Recipe 3 ounces of finely chopped garlic 2 teaspoons of mineral oil 1 pint of water ¼ ounce of dish soap Allow garlic and oil to soak for 24 hours. Add water and liquid dish soap. Stir well and strain into a glass jar for storage. To make the spray: Combine 1-2 tablespoons of concentrate in 1 pint of water to make the spray. Be careful that you don’t make it to strong since the mixture can cause leaf injury on sensitive plants. Always test the lower leaves of plants first to make sure they aren't affected. Beer Beer is another ingredient commonly found around most homes that can be used as an effective non toxic pest control. Slugs are attracted to the fermentation which explains why the following recipe works so well. Pour some beer in pie tin or empty margarine or cream cheese containers. Set containers into the dirt about 1” from the ground. (If it’s flush with the ground, you could drown ground beetles, which are important slug controllers.) Remember to check frequently and empty when needed. Homemade Pesticide Beer 2 Garlic cloves 1 tsp Hot peppers 1 cup water Mix garlic, hot peppers and water in a blender. Pour into a spray bottle and apply to plants.
