House Cleaners in the Kitchen
Using ordinary house cleaners in your kitchen that contain a lot of chemicals can be dangerous to your health. For example, most conventional kitchen degreasers contain perchloroethylene and toluene – common ingredients in commercial kitchen degreasers that are considered human carcinogens. Instead, use mild dish liquids which are designed to take care of grease. Avoid house cleaners that contain anti-microbials because they can lead to antibiotic resistance and can biodegrade into a form of dioxin. In your dishwasher, don’t use products that contain chlorine, phosphorus or anti-microbials for the same health reasons. Look for detergents that use enzymes, sodium bicarbonate and borax which naturally remove dirt and grime. | Scrape – don’t rinse – your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher because enzymes in your dishwasher soap are made to feed off the dirt left on the dish. If you rinse before putting in the dishwasher, you’ll get that nasty white film on your plates and glasses that is hard to get rid of. Who knew? | In your sink, use Bon Ami or baking soda. Porcelain enamel, artificial stone corian or acrylic sinks can all be safely cleaned with hot water, mild dish liquid or baking soda and then rinse well. Your faucets will be shinier with a cloth dipped in a little bit of Murphy’s Oil Soap and water or use 100 proof vodka because it has 50% alcohol content. It’s better than using rubbing or denatured alcohol. You can also dissolve mineral deposits from your faucets with vinegar.
Oven Cleaners
When you clean your oven, avoid those aerosol cleaners because mist and fumes can cause lung damage. Use the self-cleaning feature on your oven if you have it. If you don’t have that, you can do it by hand but it’s hard work. You can either use ammonia solutions to do the job (which should be done outside or overnight) or you can get a steam cleaner which is probably the easiest and safest way to do it without having to scrub.
Use preventive cleaning on your oven once it’s clean so you don’t have to mess with cleaning it too often. Use a baking pan under anything that may potentially spill over and if something does spill over, sprinkle salt on it and then clean it up once the oven cools.
